President Bush Senior

Yesterday while watching the inauguration, I was shocked to see President Bush Senior shuffling his feet and using a cane! My immediate thoughts were--did he fracture a vertebra? Does he have Hydrocephalus? Does he have Parkinsons? It really made me sad to see because he reminded me of my father before he was diagnosed with NPH.

My Dad and Hydrocephalus

It started in March of 2003 (officially that is) that I became my fathers full time caregiver. When I look back at the falls my father had 2 summers in a row prior to that should have been a clue. The problem with my fathers diagnosis is that he was NOT diagnosed with Hydrocephalus until he suffered a fall and fractured a vertebra in that March of 03. That was the beginning of his demise. After having Kyphoplasty (fabulous procedure to basically cement his fracture) and 2 serious months of physical therapy at The Chicago Rehabilitation facility; he was “slightly” better. I kept looking for answers—but there were none other than Dad was just physically deteriorating and at 81, well maybe his age was the reason. It wasnt until I saw a commercial on TV for Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). Bob Fowler was shuffling across the room (JUST LIKE MY FATHER). I knew that was it..It was the answer that I was looking for, but now what? That journey is a whole other blog entry, but I turned to the Cleveland Clinic where my fathers medical history started as far back as 1978 with open heart surgery. The aging brain clinic under Dr. Lucianos guidance is who ultimately performed my fathers surgery. Unfortunately, it was just too late. The surgery was very successful, but Dad had deteriorated so much so that he just couldnt make it back. His picture is on the front of this Group and what he looked like 2 months before he passed away—very frail. Had my father been tested for Hydrocephalus in that March when he fell the first time I believe the outcome would have been different. I believe my fathers passing was meant to happen when it did, but I also believe that one of my missions is to create a heightened awareness of this disease because it is NOT difficult to diagnose and treat with FABULOUS results….it is just getting to that point that is the challenge.
